Israel is listed in the 1860 and 1870 U.S. Census reports as a son of John M. and Martha Harris in Missouri. He is respectively 1 year of age and 11 years of age.
The 1880 U.S. Census lists Israel, Mary Victoria, their 1 year old son, Elliot Ray, and Mary Victoria’s mother, Mary J. Bowman. Israel is noted to be a laborer.
We have searched diligently for this family in census year 1900. We have used many variants on the name Harris and for Israel and Mary Victoria without success. By the time of this census all of the children had been born.
On the surface the 1910 census information is pretty confusing and inaccurate. This is a couple of years after Israel’s wife Mary Victoria died. The members of the family that are together reside in Grangeville, Idaho. We wonder who gave the names and ages to the census taker. Maybe the census taker was a little hard of hearing. In the 1910 census Israel’s age is about right for being born in 1859. The spelling of “Israel” reverses the ‘e’ and ‘a’. It takes some guessing to figure out who Jock (on the digital translation) is … it looks more like Jack on the image. The age 20 does not fit either James Oscar nor Jacob B. James Oscar is 27 at this time and Jacob B. is about 18. We are guessing that Jock is James Oscar, since he is still in Grangeville with a family and Israel in the household in the 1930 census. Ethel Roberta’s age is not too close either. She is actually about 14 and not 18. Harry we are guessing is ‘Mary’ Victoria (the daughter). Her age is about 10 or 11 at the time of this census. We are also guessing that she is the person who gave the data to the census taker, who should have been able to tell the difference between even a 10-year old Harry/Mary.
At the time of the 1920 census Israel is married to Altha E. Vincent (Althea E. Eastman). They are living in Grangeville, Idaho.
The next mention that we found of Israel Harris is in the 1930 U.S. Census in Grangeville Idaho. Altha is now Altha E. Scribner and living in a different household at this time. Israel is listed in the household of his son, James Oscar (Oscar J. in this census) and wife Emily. He is 71 years of age.
Israel is buried in Prairie View Cemetery in Grangeville, Idaho. The date of his death is 08 Jan 1931. The stone has the additional notation of “Father”.
